Workplace Well-Being

By Razelle Janice Drescher

Not all companies pay attention to their employees’ well-being. They may give lip service to it. Or they may take their employees for an outing where they do something fun together. But that isn’t really enough if you want a workplace that has well-being threaded throughout its daily operations. Team Building is a valuable component of a culture of well-being. But what else is needed? Learn more….

Here are a few things to consider if you like the idea of establishing practices that support well-being in your company.

  1. Build a vision for your company and invite your employees to join you in achieving that vision.
  2. Offer leadership that engages your employees in your vision so they feel they are part of something important. Invite all employees to have a ‘leadership mindset.’
  3. Create clarity for your employees by building systems that help them get up to speed in the work they do.
  4. Offer training as part of your onboarding, instead of the ‘sink or swim’ approach.
  5. Create a management system that establishes and maintains healthy work relationships by offering 1 on 1 time with a manager or supervisor regularly to discuss and offer support for challenges and opportunities that the employee is facing.

These 5 suggestions can shift a culture from apathetic to inspired.

Here are a few more.

  1. Establish standards to create a consistently high standard of daily operations and customer experience.
  2. Let employees know what they are accountable for. Use due dates and follow-up so things don’t slip between the cracks.
  3. Offer employees more responsibility as appropriate but make sure you have done your part by building the documentation they will need to succeed.
  4. Teach your managers how to address issues of sub-standard performance through invitation, not control.
  5. Recognize accomplishments.

The employee’s journey to success should begin on Day 1 or even earlier, during the recruitment process. You might like this mindset. You might even want to adopt it. But you may not know where to begin. Help is available. Sign up for a free Business Coaching Discovery Session at https://calendly.com/intentionalleaders/. You will walk away with a list of what is needed in your company to craft and implement the culture of well-being that you wish to put in place. If you want help building those elements of your company’s infrastructure, hands-on help is available too.

Your business should not depend on you or any one employee for success. That puts your business at risk. Putting systems and standards in place is a good start and opens the door to selling your business when you are ready to ensure a return on your investment. You can also teach your employees to ‘think systems’ when there is a frustration in the workplace. “What’s missing?” is something everyone involved should be asking when a frustration arises. The answer to that question will identify the missing ‘system.’ Building and implementing that system will eliminate the frustration.
